Bonnie Schneider
As a result of graduating from the Bachelor of Music program (Boston University, 1963) however, after experiencing the liberal arts in my teaching career (Brown University 1971-75) I'm an advocate of education that incorporates studies in the arts alongside study of other fields. This is not a surprise since an ethnomusicologist with a PhD and an MA from UCLA has a keen interest in the arts. This isn't a surprise since the department of ethnomusicology is located at UC Berkeley, where I was an instructor from 1975 to 1976 sits in a college of letters and Science's Department of Music. I love exploring my interests in a variety of areas and focusing on the bigger picture. It's a pleasure to teach both graduate and undergraduate students. I am the with three of my books published: Music in India: the Classical Traditions; Thinking Musically as well as Music in Japan, Experiencing the Music of Expressing Culture. And I alternate periods when I am pursuing primarily academic activities with periods when I add administrative duties to my schedule (Chair of the Department of Music 1983-88, Dean of Undergraduate Advising 1992-98; Chair of all the Deans at the College of Letters and Science 1994-98, Chairperson of the Group on Asian Studies, since 1999 and currently as Chair of the Department of Music again).
